Challenges at CubeCold Moerdijk

CubeCold, a leading provider in cold and frozen logistics, faced insufficient power supply due to grid congestion at their Moerdijk location. This resulted in uncertainty, uncontrollable electricity costs, and inefficient utilization of their grid connection. Additionally, the company relied unnecessarily and inefficiently on expensive (fossil) energy sources.

Energy Goals and Growth Ambitions

CubeCold had several key energy priorities. One of the most critical was drastically reducing energy costs to secure the company’s future viability and growth ambitions. Other energy goals included:

  • Ensuring supply reliability for customers: guaranteeing the quality of chilled and frozen products.
  • Reducing the direct impact of grid congestion on operations.
  • Gaining overview, insight, and interpretation of energy data at the machine level.
  • Lowering energy procurement costs to remain competitive.
  • Sustainability in energy supply, reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
  • Minimizing dependency on external energy sources.

"Thanks to QING's optimization, we are not only saving on energy costs but also ensuring the supply reliability of our business."

Frans van Helden, CFO at CubeCold

How CubeCold saves €600,000 on energy annually

To achieve the identified energy goals, QING began with a comprehensive analysis of all energy flows across the entire location. Data was collected and analyzed, leading to five concrete optimization steps.

Optimization 1: Installing an energy monitoring system for detailed insights

The electricity consumption of all machines was mapped in detail. The analysis revealed, among other things, that cooling temperatures were set lower than necessary. A simple adjustment resulted in significant savings. Result: Clear insight and overview of all energy flows and processes.

Optimization 2: New electricity procurement strategy

A complex data analysis revealed that purchasing electricity on the day-ahead market was more cost-effective for CubeCold Moerdijk than locking in electricity prices for several years. Result: €35,000 in expected annual savings thanks to the revised energy procurement strategy.

Optimization 3: Implementation of a rooftop solar power system

A feasibility study demonstrated that a solar power system would be highly cost-effective. QING managed the tendering process and took over part of the project management for CubeCold to implement a large-scale solar system on their roof. Results:

€425,000 saved through effective tendering and selecting the right party to install the panels.

€10,000 saved annually thanks to improved quantification of the optimal number of solar panels.

Optimization 4: optimization of generator usage

In cases where an energy demand peak exceeds grid capacity, generators can handle this peak demand. However, an oversized generator results in unnecessarily high costs. By analyzing energy consumption, the optimal generator size was determined. Result: €30,000 saved annually by calculating and implementing the correctly sized generator.

Optimization 5: Development of an energy management system for smart source selection and maximum cost savings

The three energy sources—solar power, grid electricity, and generator power—were optimized to work in harmony. The Energy Management System designed by QING ensures that the most cost-effective energy source is always used, prioritizing solar power, followed by grid electricity, and lastly, generator power. Result: €10,000 saved per month by adjusting machines to cool less deeply, further enhancing cost efficiency.

Benefits for CubeCold after energy optimizations

The total annual cost savings from all optimizations amount to €600,000. However, the greater benefit lies in CubeCold’s ability to achieve:

  • Uninterrupted growth,
  • Greater certainty in energy management, and
  • Avoidance of uncontrollable costs in the future.

These improvements provide a sustainable advantage, both now and in the future.
